Drivers Door

The drivers door was always hard to close. You basically had to slam it to get it to close all the way. That was a real nuisance. Now it closes super easy and fits great.

To fix the door you need only remove the old hinge pins and put in new ones as explained beautifully in this video. Of course this vehicle has been monkeyed with over the years so this was not that easy.

The main challenge was that the bottom hinge pin was collared top and bottom and welded in place. To remove this my technique was to SawZall out the welded parts. That was easier said than done. I wore out no less than 8 normal saw blades and hadn’t made any noticeable difference, even though I was putting cutting oil on the blades every few seconds.

I went to the store to get the toughest blade they had and discovered the Diablo Carbide blades. These blades were amazing in that they cut at all. I only needed three blades to finish the job. I will only buy these in the future.

I also replaced the rocker pin since it was bent. It was also welded in place by the way.

Want to also say that the spring for the door rocker is super powerful. It’s lethal and should be handled like a loaded gun. Definitely get the spring removal tool if you are going to attempt working on the door pins.

In a perfect world I would someday find the guy who welded the door pins in place and, after hitting him square in the jaw, as why this was done. The job is easy enough and new pins and bushings are just $9. Just why?
